Lady Gouldian Finch (Erythrura gouldiae)
The Lady Gouldian Finch is a vibrant and colorful passerine bird endemic to Australia, characterized by its striking black, green, yellow, and red markings. Both sexes display bright colors, although females tend to be less vivid. The species was first described in 1844 by British ornithological artist John Gould and named after his wife, Elizabeth. While they are small in size, these finches thrive in aviary settings and enjoy a spacious, planted garden.

Temperament:
Lady Gouldians are best suited as “watching only” birds. They are not fond of being held and can experience extreme stress from handling, which can be fatal. Therefore, they are not recommended for novice bird owners.
Breeding:
Lady Gouldian Finches typically nest in tree hollows near water sources. They breed at the beginning of the dry season when food is abundant. The male performs a captivating courtship dance, showcasing his colorful plumage. After mating, the female lays 4-8 eggs, and both parents participate in brooding and caring for the chicks. The young leave the nest between 19 and 23 days old and become independent at 40 days. It’s recommended that Gouldians are at least one year old before breeding. They prefer nesting in covered spaces, such as wooden boxes, to prevent injury.
Diet:
A suitable diet for Gouldian Finches includes specialized finch seed, supplemented with liquid iodine, which is crucial for their health.
