Gouldian Finch Baby
The Gouldian Finch Baby (Erythrura gouldiae), or Lady Gouldian Finch, is one of the most stunningly colorful passerine birds native to Australia. Known for their vibrant colors, they are often referred to as “rainbow finches.” British ornithologist John Gould described this finch in 1844, naming it after his wife, Elizabeth Gould. In Australia, they’re commonly called Gouldian finches and belong to the Estrildidae family.
Description & Traits
- Size/Weight: Approximately 5.5 inches and 16-17 grams
- Lifespan: Up to 10 years
- Temperament: These are calm birds best suited for aviaries or planted outdoor enclosures. They are viewing birds rather than handling birds, as stress from handling can be harmful.
- Color Variations: Both sexes display black, green, yellow, and red markings, with females being slightly less bright. Green-backed Gouldians are called “normals.” If you have a preferred color mutation, please specify in the order comments.
Breeding & Care
Lady Gouldian finches typically nest in tree holes near water and breed in the early dry season. Males engage in a lively courtship dance, fluffing and expanding their feathers to impress females. After mating, females lay 4–8 eggs, which both parents incubate and raise until the young are independent. These finches do best with nesting boxes or covered baskets.
Recommended Diet:
- Gouldian Finch Seed, Australian Blend Goldenfeast
- Mineral Grit, Cuttlefish Bone
- Dried Egg Food, Herb Salad, and Millet Sprays
- Liquid Iodine is essential to maintain their health
