Description
Variable Seedeater
The variable seedeater (Sporophila corvina) is indeed a small passerine bird known for its range extending from southern Mexico through Central America to the Chocó region in northwestern South America. This bird is a member of the tanager family and primarily inhabits areas with open woodland, scrub, and grassy clearings. The taxonomy of the variable seedeater has been complex and somewhat confusing due to its close relation to similar species. Previously, it was classified as a subspecies of the Sporophila americana, commonly known as the wing-barred seedeater, but it has since been recognized as a distinct species. This reclassification reflects ongoing research on its vocalizations, plumage, and genetic differentiation from related species.
One notable characteristic of the variable seedeater is its variation in appearance. Males are generally black with white or grayish patterns, while females tend to be brownish.
