Greenwing

The favorite of my husband and my youngest son!

Everything about these birds is BIG! Their bodies are massive, their heads oversized and their beaks are gigantic. Their feet are huge and so are their droppings, especially the first one of the morning. I’m not sure which is larger, their brain or their heart.

Greenwing Macaws are extremely intelligent, perhaps the most intelligent of the large macaws. Of course with intelligence comes the propensity for getting into trouble and boy do they ever! While not as mechanically inclined as the Blue-throat they do love puzzles and games and tricks. Often the trick is on us! They have an amazing zest for life, living each day to it’s fullest. They put their Big Hearts into everything they do including their love for their favorite human. This does not mean they are one person birds. Nothing could be further from the truth. These are flock birds that relate well although perhaps on different levels with the entire family.

Greenwings are loud. Very loud. But I find they rarely scream or use their loudest voices when they are in a happy, stimulating and nurturing environment. My husband’s pet screams once a day, when he sees us preparing his dinner. Once served, he quietly eats and that is the end of it.

Many Greenwings have an extensive vocabulary using words and phrases appropriately. We have one that can almost sing an entire song. When he belts it out everyone can hear it! His favorite line from the song is: Sing of Happy! Not Sad! He skips, he jumps and he reminds us not to eat or drink when the food is too hot!
